Yes. A refurbished device receives the same software updates as a new device of the same model. Apple or Samsung does not distinguish between whether your device is new or refurbished. However, it is useful to know how long your model will continue to receive updates. This depends on the model and the year it was released, not on when you buy it.
Why are updates important?
Software updates give you new features, but above all, security updates. These fix vulnerabilities and keep your data safe. Updates also often ensure that apps continue to work properly and that your device keeps running smoothly.
There are two types of updates:
- Major updates: a new version of the operating system, such as a new iOS or Android version, with new features.
- Security updates: smaller updates that keep your device secure.
How long do iPhones receive updates?
Apple has supported iPhones with updates for many years. Apple does not specify a fixed period, but in practice, an iPhone often receives major updates for six to seven years or longer.
The latest version, iOS 27, was released in September 2026. This update is available for the iPhone 11 and later, and for the iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation). No models were dropped this year. If your iPhone runs iOS 26, it will also receive iOS 27.
Please note: not every feature works on every model. Apple Intelligence, Apple's smart AI features, only works on the iPhone 15 Pro and later. An older iPhone will therefore receive the update, but not all the new features.
How long do Samsung devices receive updates?
Samsung has started providing updates for much longer in recent years. Exactly how long depends on the model:
- Galaxy S24 and later: 7 years of Android updates and security updates. This also applies to recent foldable devices and Galaxy Tab S tablets.
- Recent Galaxy A models (from the end of 2024, such as the Galaxy A16 and A56): 6 years of updates.
- Galaxy S21 through to S23: 4 major Android updates and 5 years of security updates.
It is precisely because of this long-term support that we started offering refurbished Samsung devices in 2024. This means you can be sure that your Samsung will also last a long time in its second life.
What should you consider when choosing?
- Look at the year it was launched: the update period starts from when the model was released. A newer model will therefore receive updates for longer.
- Consider how long you want to use the device: do you want to use it for years? Then choose a more recent model.
- Check which features are important to you: would you like to use Apple Intelligence, for example? Then choose at least an iPhone 15 Pro.

How do I install an update?
- iPhone or iPad: go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Samsung: go to Settings > Software update > Download and install.
Make sure you have a Wi-Fi connection, sufficient battery power and enough free storage space. Back up your device beforehand, and you will always be prepared.
What if my device no longer receives updates?
Your device will continue to work as normal. However, you will no longer receive new features, and after a while, you will no longer receive security updates either. Some apps may eventually stop working. Would you like to replace your device then? You can sell your old device to us and choose a more recent refurbished model.
